Saline Rotary's Rubber Duck Race To Fund International Project

On Aug. 10, a couple hundred little rubber ducks will race down the Saline River at Curtiss Park. The impact will be felt around the world.

This second annual Saline Rotary Rubber Duck Race takes place at 2 p.m.  during the Summerfest activities. Members of the club are selling ducks for $10 or three for $20. Prizes will be awarded for the first 10 ducks to cross the finish line.

Last year's duck race helped fund community projects, including the Mike Price Fitness Trail being spearheaded by recent Saline High School graduate Kelly Hall. This year, Saline Rotary Club is planning its first overseas project.

“We’re hoping to do our first international project,” said Jill Durnen, chairperson of the club’s Service Projects committee.

The club was inspired to launch an international project after hearing about member Smita Nagpal’s visits with a Rotary Club in India. Rotary International has helped India fight polio. India, once an epicenter of poliovirus, recently celebrated a year without a new polio case.  Nearly 119,000 Rotarians in India, supported by Rotarians from around the world, helped administer the polio vaccine to children, organize  free health camps and polio awareness rallies, and distribute banners, caps, comic books, and other items.

Nagpal will share news of her trip at the Aug. 8 Saline Rotary Club meeting at Travis Pointe Country Club.

Tickets can be purchased at the Saline branches of United Bank & Trust and KeyBank or from any Rotarian. Ducks will also be sold at Saline Rotary Casino Night at Summerfest on August 9.
