Saline Celebrates Henry Ford's Birthday

Henry Ford was one of the world's most influential men of the 20th Century.

Saturday, Saline celebrates the 150th birthday of a man who also had a profound effect on Saline.

The Saline Area Historical Society and Briarwood Ford host Henry Ford's 150th Birthday Party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, July 20, at the Rentschler Farm Museum, 1265 Michigan Avenue.

"Saline has a strong connection with Henry Ford," said Dean Greb, the president of the Saline Area Historical Society. "We think it's worth celebrating."

The celebration includes many antique vehicles, including a Model A, Model T, and old trucks and tractors. Actor Russell Dore will impersonate Henry Ford during a performance in the barn at 1 p.m. There will also be musical performances, exhibits, food and beverages.

"I think this is going to be fun day at the Rentschler Farm," Greb said.

Jim Roth also created a 12-minute video detailing Ford's connection with Saline.

"Jim is a master at these videos. He always does a great job," Greb said.

Ford became interested in Saline in 1937, when he purchased the Schuyler Mill near the site of Weller's on Michigan Avenue. He also constructed a soy bean extraction plant. The plants created oils used for plastic and paint that was used to build Ford vehicles. According to the Saline Area Historical Society website, Ford also purchased the Hoyt School on Macon Road and had it moved and reconstructed across the street (It now houses Design Hub, across from Weller's).

Ford's presence in Saline grew when, in 1966, the Rentschler family sold off property for the Ford Motor Company factory. Today the factory is operated by Faurecia, which still produces interior components for Ford vehicles.

Admission is free. Donations are always welcome.
