Saline Was To Be Home to Teacher Retirement Village
Sometimes, procrastinating yields interesting results.
Did you know that Saline was once pegged for a 250-acre teachers' retirement village that would have included a high-rise apartment building and cottages to house 1,500 people?
According to articles in the Saline Reporter from the 1960s, the major develop would have been located behind Saline High School (Liberty School), off of Steiner Court.
The project, hyped from 1962 to 1967, did get started, with retired teachers from Dearborn, Tawas and Garden City moving into modest townhouses. But it appears the project shifted to Ann Arbor when the Michigan Education Home Association was able to purchase common stock in Huron Towers on Fuller Street.
Interesting, perhaps, that all these years later, the Linden Square assisted living center is nearing opening on what was like part of the village.
