Cross Country: Saline Girls 7th in Legends Gold Race

Running without senior Gillian Walter, the Lady Hornets finished seventh in the “Gold” race at the High School Coaching Legends Invite at Huron Meadows Metro Park Saturday. Saline finished with 189 points. The event was won by Birmingham Seaholm, which scored 57 points.

Sophomore Jessi Larson ran the 5K in a career-best 17:51.7, beating her old mark by 18 seconds. Hannah Cummings was 20th in a season-best time of 18:54.  With Saline’s usual number three runner out, Gillian Hartley was next for the Lady Hornets. She was 57th in 20:15. Freshman Emma Cummings was 59th in 20:18. Fellow freshman Katelyn Norman (62nd, 20:21) completed the Hornets’ scoring. Cummings and Norman both set personal marks. Kate Clark (65th), Juliana Romero (75th) and Becky Cantrell (84th) all set personal bests, which Lillie Phelps (78th) set a season best by 21 seconds. Haleigh Cummings was 85th the night after being crowned Homecoming Queen.

Alexa Reyst ran a strong race in the JV race, where Saline finished second (61 points) to Brighton (24 points). Reyst was sixth in 20:23, beating her season-best time by 46 seconds. Brighton placed four of the top five runners in the race. Alexa Stern (10th, 20:42) also set a season-best time. Kayla Fortino (14th), Kyra Ross and Abby Wilson (19th) completed the Hornet scoring, with Ross and Wilson setting personal-best times and Fortino setting a season-best time.
