Field Hockey: After Big Game, Saline is the Last Undefeated Team Standing

The only two undefeated teams in Division II Michigan High School field hockey faced off at Saline High School Saturday afternoon. When it was over, only the Lady Hornets remained undefeated.

Sophia Tzavras and Sierra Hazard scored as Saline defeated Forest Hills, 2-0.  The game was a rematch of last year’s dramatic regional final, in which Saline beat Forest Hills in a double overtime shootout round to advance to the final four.

"Forest Hills is a traditional powerhouse in DII.  They are well coached and have great discipline with the ball," coach Erica Reilly said.

Saline posted their first goal of the game with 10 minutes left in the first half, when Midfielder Shannon Reilly took the Hornets’ first shot on net.  It was redirected into the corner with a tip by Center Forward Sophia Tzavaras.

"Sophia has great eye-hand coordination and a knack for scoring."

This is the second time in a week that Tzavaras scored the game winning goal on a tipped ball.

The second half goal was scored by Junior Sierra Hazard on a scramble in front of the net.

Coach Reilly was impressed by her team’s defensive performance.

"Our defense was lead today by Senior Abby Martin who played so tough,” Reilly said. “She and right midfielder Devin Reilly connected on many passes and feed the ball up to Hannah Jarvie at right wing."

Coach Reilly was pleased by her team’s ability to stay focused on the big game.

"There were a lot of distractions all week- with homecoming and spirit week- but our team stayed focused on this big game.  I am so proud of what they accomplished today."

The Hornets are now 9-0-1 in divisional play and 11-0-1 overall.

Saline’s next game is Monday at 5:30 p.m. at home when the Hornets take on St. Catherine of Siena Academy.  The team is celebrating teacher appreciation night.
