Superintendent Graden Pitches Bond Proposal to City Council Monday

Saline Area Schools Superintendent Scot Graden will present information about the $67.5 million bond proposal at Monday’s meeting of Saline City Council.

Graden’s presentation is one of three on the agenda. Plante Moran will present findings from this year’s audit and Parks and Rec Director Carla Scruggs will present Green Thumb Awards to citizens who’ve worked hard to beautify their properties.

City council will also discuss:

  • extending its polling place agreements with Saline Area Schools and First United Methodist Church. The school district does not charge for use of the Liberty School gym. The church only charges if clean-up is necessary. The proposed renewal is for five years.
  • a new policy to allow residents to throw “block parties” with greater ease. The policy would give the city manager the authority to approve or deny requests.
  • adopting new rules and regulation for Oakwood Cemetery. One rule would require anyone selling a lot to sell it back to the city. Resale of lots is prohibited.
  • Merchant Park. Plans to improve the area behind Merchant Square were moving along despite some acrimony. But when members of First Presbyterian Church learned of the plan to move the grease pit and dumpster from behind Dan’s to behind their building, they showed up to voice their concerns at a council meeting. Their letter objecting to the project is in the council’s agenda packet. It appears unlikely that improvement will take place this year or in 2016.

In the consent agenda:

  • Mayor Marl recommends the appointment of Lisa Slawson to the Zoning Board of Appeals.
  • Art Trapp recommends appointing Mary Alice Smith to the city’s Volunteer Committee. Pat Corfman is resigning.
  • There is a request to re-appoint Dennis Schneider and Karl Hatopp to two-year teams on the Library Board.

During the work session, which begins at 6:30 p.m., council will review community event applications and requests to waive associated city costs. Here are the requests received by council, along with estimated costs:

  • Winterfest, $0
  • Memorial Day Parade $3,020
  • Summer Music Series $$2,100
  • Celtic Festival $5,550
  • Summerfest $3,950
  • Pep Rally, $0
  • Oktoberfest $4,800
  • Fair & Parade $1,890
  • Scarecrow Contest $0.00
  • Christmas Parade/Tree Lighting $3,290
  • Yearly Cost $24,600
