Michigan Ave Crash Kills 1, Sends 1 to Hospital in Critical Condition

A head-on, two-vehicle collision killed 33-year-old Chad Hilborn, a Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office corrections officer, this morning on Michigan Avenue, just east of Arkona Road in Bridgewater Township. James D. Austin, 43, of Tecumseh, driver of the other vehicle in the crash, was transported in critical condition by Life Flight to University of Michigan Hospital.

The crash occurred at approximately 7:45 a.m. Hilborn was driving a Pontiac G6 westbound on US 12 when he apparently crossed center and struck the eastbound F-150 driven by Austin.

Hilborn was pronounced dead at the scene. Austin was critically injured and transported by Life Flight to the University of Michigan Hospital.

Hilborn, of Clinton, leaves behind a wife and two daughters. Austin is co-owner of A&H Lawn Service in Saline.

They were the only occupants in the vehicles.

Both parties were wearing seatbelts, according to the press release. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors, according to police.

Michigan Avenue was closed between Willow and Arkona roads as first responders worked at the site and remains closed as Michigan State Police investigate.

Clinton Fire Department responded to the scene. The Saline Area Fire Department assisted.

A fundraiser has been set up in support of Hilborn's family. Click this link or see below to donate.
