Keith Strong in the Pool as Saline Takes 2

Saline’s swim and dive team finished the SEC regular season with a couple of victories over Dexter and Huron Thursday.

Saline bested Dexter, 110-75, and Huron, 120-66, on senior night at the Saline High School natatorium. Seniors Robert Calimente, Ian McEwen, Luke Shafer and Arie Dekraker were honored, but a couple of sophomores stole the show.

Dakota Hurbis broke his own Saline High School record in diving with a score of 307.55. It was the fourth time this year Hurbis broke the record. But Huron senior Will Brenner won the event with a score of 316.55, setting a new Saline High School pool record. Saline junior Alex Calder finished third with a score of 291.65.

Saline sophomore Daniel Keith also had a great night. He won the 200 IM by more than three seconds, finishing in 1:54.33.  Keith also won the backstroke in 52.79 seconds, winning by nearly three seconds again. Keith also helped the 400 free relay to victory and the 200 medley relay team to a second place finish.

Junior Jacob Ehrman was first in the 200 yard freestyle, winning in 1:42.49 – nearly six seconds faster than the second place finisher from Huron. Freshman Matt Filsinger won the 500 yard freestyle in 4:51.49, edging Dexter’s Matt Bergdolt by .06 seconds. Freshman Jared Erhman was third with a D1 state cut time of 4:54.46. Saline’s other victory came in the 100 breaststroke, where Matthew Lau won in 1:01.33. Jacob Ehrman was second in 1:03.06.

Joining Keith on the winning 400 relay team were junior Ryan Klemptner, Jacob Ehrman and Jared Ehrman.

Huron’s Will Brenner won the 50-yard free in 20.89. Klemptner was third in a D1-qualifying time of 22.36.

Dexter’s Andrew Pek won the 100 fly in 53.08. McEwen was second in 56.69. Max Duong was third in 56.72. Huron’s Ji Ho Hyun was first in the 100 freestyle in 48.12. Dexter’s Jimmy Morgan was second. Klemptner was third in 49.48. Greg Wenning was fifth.

Other top five Saline finishes were turned in by: Anthony Dekraker, 3rd, 100 backstroke; Filsinger, 4th, 200 IM; Lau, 4th, 50 freestyle; Duong, 5th, 50 freestyle.

The relay team of Keith, Lau, McEwen and Wenning was second in the 200 medley relay. The team of Klemptner, Lau, Calimente and Shafer was second in the 200 freestyle relay.

Saline competes at the MISCA meet Friday and Saturday at Eastern Michigan University.
