Questions Answered by Tammie King

Describe Your Business: Bemis Farms Preschool & Childcare was established in 1994 on 18 acres of farmland.  Based on HighScope Curriculum, Bemis Farms provides a complete program that focuses on active participatory leaning for
children 6 weeks through 12 years of age.  Staff members are professionally trained and committed to providing personalized attention and care to each child.

What is your business best known for? Bemis Farms Preschool & Childcare is probably best known for our expansive outdoor area. A local farmer plants rotating grain crops.  Each classroom has a large playground where the children can enjoy the beauty of the surrounding natural elements.  We have been recognized as a National Backyard Habitat and Schoolyard Habitat.  Bemis Farms offers children unique opportunities to interact with nature the children have opportunities to plant, nurture, water, and watch a variety of plant life as it grows.

Tell us something people might not know about your business: Bemis Farms Preschool & Childcare is proud to have been granted accreditation from the National Assoiciation for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), located in Washington D.C. This means we provide a safe and nurturing environment that promotes the physical, social, emotional and cognitive development of young children.

How many years have you been in business? Since February of 1994 - 19 years.

Why did you decide to go into this business? When found in the position of securing care for her grand-daughter, Priscilla, a retired school teacher, was not satisfied with what was available.  It was then that she decided to start her own preschool and childcare to be able to provide the quality care that she was looking for.

How many employees do you have? 35 (this includes both our Saline and Lincoln programs)

Who is your longest-serving employee? Virginia Elliott - 14 years

Describe a moment in your business life that makes all the hard work “worth it.” It is very rewarding to see children who have gone through our program in different stages of their lives.  We have some who have come back to work for us and some who bring their own children to us now.  However, by far, it really feels amazing when a parent recognizes us as one of the driving forces that shaped their child into who they are today.

What do you love about going to work each day? Every day has its own rewards, whether witnessing a child accomplish something for the first time or just receiving a smile or hug makes every day worthwhile.
