Hornets Set Team Record

If you’re going to make team history, you might as well do it at the Legends

The Saline girls’ cross country team’s race Saturday will go into the Hornet record books.

Elianna Shwayder, Gillian Walter, Gloria Park, Lauren Green and Alyssa Cummings posted the fastest  top-five scoring times in Saline girls’ cross country history at the Coaching Legends Classic held at Huron Meadows Metropark. The girls’ times ranged from 18:17 to 18:43.

Despite the record-setting performance, Saline settled for second behind Seaholm, which finished with 26 points. The Hornets finished with 46 points.

Shwayder was the fastest Hornet Saturday, beating her all-time personal record by 26 seconds to finish fourth overall in 18:17. Freshman Walter was eighth, beating her season-best time by 32 seconds. She finished in 18:27. Park (11th, 18:35) and Green (13th, 18:39) also set all-time personal bests.  Cummings (15th, 18;43) bested her season mark by 33 seconds.

Five other Hornets finished with medals. Hannah Cummings (21st, 19:00), Abby Rentschler (22nd, 19:03), Haleigh Cummings (33rd, 19:22), Kelly Hall (35th, 19:24) and Lillie Phelps (75th, 20:29) also ran the varsity race for Saline. Hall set an all-time personal best.

Team scores weren’t kept in the junior varsity race. But if they were, Saline would have won. The Hornets placed four runners in the top seven and eight in the top 13.

Lindsay Walter (2nd, 19:53) was Saline’s first over the finish line. Jenny Kise (4th, 20:21), Katie Fedoronko (5th, 20:38), Mara VanSickle (7th, 20:44) and Danielle Fillmore (10th, 20:56) had top 10 finishes for Saline.
