Saline Rules the Pool at Spartan Relays

The Lady Hornets were the best of the best at Saturday’s Spartan Relays swim meet at Lakeview High School.

Saline took first place in a meet featuring some of the best teams in the state. The Hornets finished with 312 points, edging Portage Central, which tallied 293 points.

The Saline swimmers, who were state-runner ups last year after two straight state titles, needed a strong finish to pull out the victory, winning three of the final four events.

In the eight swim relays, Saline had four first-place finishes and four second-place finishes. Miranda Eberle also aided the Hornet cause with a third place finish in diving, finishing less than five points out of first place.

Saline opened the race when the 200-yard breaststroke relay team of Terese Larson, Ariana Brown, Emily McCullough and Sophie Brightman won by seven seconds.

The Hornets recorded their next win the 200-yard breaststroke relay. Allison Eppinga, Hannah Lau, Cristina Czyrka and Emily Lau finished in 1:53.9 seconds to win by more than eight seconds.

In the 800-yard freestyle relay, Kate Rogers, Sam Tommelleo, Maddy Frost and Cristina Czyrka finished first in 8:09.97.

Saline clinched the meet by winning the 200-freestyle relay. Amelia Armstrong-Grant, Eppinga, Emily Lau and Kate Rogers won in 1:40.83 seconds, winning the event by 13.01 seconds.

Melanie Schroeder, Alex McPherson, Erika Glatz and Serena Yan were second in the 400 freestyle. Kelsey Holmberg, Melyssa Aben, Schroeder and Larson were second in the 400 medley relay.
