Track & Field: Skyline Girls Edge Saline in SEC Red Track & Field Meet

It wasn’t settled until after the sun set. Skyline and Saline were dead even with 66 points when the final event – the 4-by-400 relay – began. The deciding race was held in the dark, and the Eagles prevailed to win the meet.

Still, the Hornets, led by Lauryn Hunt and Kayla Fortino, had a strong day – especially on the track. The Eagles won by dominating in the field.

Fortino won the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter events. Hunt won the 100 and 400-meter races and placed second in the 200.

The Hornets opened the day by taking the 4-by-800 in 9:52. Their b-team took third in 10:10.

Emily Cook picked up points for Saline by taking second (16:57) in the 100 hurdles.

Hunt won the 100-meter sprint in 12.9 seconds. Charlotte Rittenhouse was third in 13.56 seconds.

In the 4-by-200 relays, Saline’s teams took second and third.

Saline swept the points in the 1600-meter race. Fortino (5:28.14) and Madison Wood (5:28.53) ran in lockstep to finish first and second. Nicole Dillman was third (5:40.19). Madison Stern, Madeline Stewart and Claire Endres gave Saline a sweep of the top six spots.

Saline won the 4-by-100 relay in 51.31 seconds. Saline also took third.

Hunt’s second victory came in the 400-meter race. She won in 1:01.3 seconds - .1 seconds faster than Zsofia Hull.

Cook turned in another second place performance in the 300-meter hurdles (49.14).

In the 800-meters, it was the Fortino-Wood show again. Fortino won in 2:24.22 and Wood was .3 seconds behind.

Hunt took second in the 200 meters (27.02).

Fortino’s third win of the day came in the 3200 meters, which she ran in 11:40. Madison Stern was third in 11:45.

In the field, Skyline took 32 of 45 points, winning each event. Tenley Schrzan was second in the high jump (4’8). Margaret Downey (15’10) and Bryn Batten (14’9) were second and third in the long jump. Charlotte Peterson and Elise Renberg (8’6) placed second and third in the pole vault. Morgan Boze (27’1) was third in shot put. Hailey Garner (76’4) was third in discus.
