Saline FFA Sweeps Top 3 Placings for State Broiler Contest

Every year Saline FFA competes in the Michigan FFA State Broiler contest. This year they took the gold, not once, not twice, but 3 times! A clean 1, 2, 3, sweep.

What is a broiler contest?

A broiler is young chicken raised for meat. At the beginning of each school year, the classes of David Mellor receive hundreds of broilers. Students can sign up to raise chickens on their own or in a group, thus competing as an individual or in a group. Along with these individual groups, Mr. Mellor’s had class birds as well. Each of his 4 classes helped to take care of the 52 class birds. Feeding them, giving them water, and keeping their coop clean.

When and Where?

On October 31st, 2018, all students competing went to Munsell’s Poultry Processing in Fowlerville MI. and showed their 5 best birds. After processing the chickens, judges from Michigan State University look at different features of each individual chicken. These features include: Breast, Legs, Thighs, Defects, Finish, Uniformity, Weight, Oral Questions, Report Sheet, Feed Efficiency, Diagrams, Tags, Graphs, Charts, and Photos. Judges can score students out of 1015 points total.

How good did Saline ACTUALLY do?

Saline managed to place in First, Second, and Third this year. The scores go as following…

• State Winner: Cameron Corwin -. Total score of 899/1015.
• State Runner Up: Ryan Luckhardt - Total score of 890/1015.
• 3rd Place: Saline Agriscience Biology Birds Team - Total score of 884/1015.
• A fourth team of Annie Rothfuss & Sydney Masters scored a State Silver Rating
