Student Anxiety Subject of Film Screening, Panel Discussion Wednesday

According to the World Health Organization, anxiety disorders are the most common mental health challenge in the U.S., impacting 54 percent of females and 46 percent of males, with seven being the median age of onset.

The National Institute of Mental Health reports that anxiety affects 32% of kids between age 13 – 19, with 38% of teenage girls and 26% of teenage boys being affected.

The symptoms of anxiety are similar for teens and adults.  These include:

• Excessive worrying about potential harm
• Worry about primary care giver
• Avoidance of activities that separate teen from care giver
• Nightmares
• Stomach aches
• Head aches
• Nausea and vomiting
• Sweating

Saline Area Schools and Chelsea Schools invite parents and students to view the Indie Flix Original film “Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety."  Angst is a film created to begin a global conversation about anxiety in children, what it looks like and what can be done to help kids struggling with anxiety.

Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety will be shown on Wednesday, October 17, 2018 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Saline High School Auditorium.  The film will be followed by a panel discussion, led by Brad Bezeau, Saline Middle School Principal, with special guests from across Washtenaw County.

The program is designed for children ten and older, and all adults.  Viewing the film Angst and the panel discussion that follows is free for all students and community members.  Everyone, especially students, are encouraged to attend.

One in three of our children are experiencing anxiety everyday in our schools.  Many believe that they are alone in this suffering.  Many feel ashamed.  Most don’t know how to talk about what is happening to them.  Working together, we can help our kids.
