The land of ice hockey and maple syrup is also home to the musicians who inspired this year’s Saline High School Marching Band halftime show.
After summer camp and five days of rehearsals, the 197-member strong marching band debuted Friday night at the Saline-Chippewa Valley at Hornet Stadium. This year’s performance is a salute to Canadian musicians and bands. It features the music of Steppenwolf, Rush and other artists from the Great White North.
Nate Lampman is Director of the marching band. Benn Reed and Scot Cannell are assistant directors. Jessica McDonald is the color guard instructor, Dan Parker is drumline instructor and Susan Usher is majorette instructor.
Michael Lance returns as drum major. He’s joined this year by Holden Collins.

Section leaders are Cameron Tressler (alto sax), Ainsley Caldwell (baritone), Josh VerWoert (bass drum), Lucas Schultz (clarinet), Faith Sweet (clarinet), Cameron Crawford (cymbals), Danae Jarrett (mellophone), Megan Szczypka (piccolo), Max Schneider (snare drum), Jason Landini (sousaphone), Leah Keller (tenor sax), Savannah Harris (trombone), Zach Gabanyicz (trumpet) and Chris Hays (trumpet).
The marching band prepared for the season with a week-long camp at Spring Arbor University in July. Rehearsals began Aug. 20.
Saline’s band has a tradition of excellence. The band received a rating of “Superior” at the District Band Festival last fall, receiving the highest score possible from all three judges.
Director Lampman is pleased by the band’s work thus far.
“The band has been working very hard. The students have a great work ethic and attitude,” Lampman said.
Patchy rain nearby, with a high of 44 and low of 30 degrees. Don't forget your umbrella! Overcast for the morning, sunny in the afternoon and evening, overcast overnight.
Nice idea. Thank you to the kids who support this. Seems a bit of diversity in the make-up of the kids leading the group would go a long way to making "everyone" feel welcome. Sadly, not seeing it, at least in what is presented here.
Awful, racist perspective. There is nothing wrong with the "make-up" of these four kids.
Not saying there is anything wrong with those four kids. Really appreciate what they are doing and think it is great. Hardly find it racist to think having folks representative of other "groups" leading the group would go even further to making everyone feel welcome.
As we noticed the rapid deterioration and indentation of the road from all of this truck traffic, which presumably will only get worse as the weather and road surface gets warmer, we have wondered just who is responsible for the cost to repair/replace these roads?
Did anyone ask the nearby residents if they want a party palace in their neighborhood? Traffic, parking, crowds, trash, noise: was any of this considered when making this decision?
The organizers are required to submit an application to the City of Saline for this event. If you wish to provide input, comments can be sent to the City Clerk or made in person at anytime or more specifically when their application appears on the council agenda.
Providing input just like the data center had input given. When a decision is made around here, it has already been made.
