Nick Urquhart Is State Champ in Technical Drafting

To say that that Saline student Nick Urquhart is talented in the field of technical drafting is an understatement.

Not only was Nick Urquhart the top among Michigan high schoolers at the SkillsUSA state championship in Grand Rapids, he was better than the top college competitors, who were tasked with the same problem.

“Nick not only won gold in the high school division, he scored higher than the gold medalist in the college division,” teacher Steve Vasiloff said. “Since he was the top placer out of both divisions, he was given the industry awards.”

The awards included a $1,200 office chair by Herman Miller and a $430 “spacemouse combo,” which is a joystick and mouse for CAD operators.

Urquhart will represent Michigan at the national finals this June in Louisville.

Saline was represented very well in this competition. Ruth Sullivan finished second and took home silver

“he performed really well, and finished just 8.5 points behind Nick in the 1000 point contest. Both of them finished 130 points ahead of the bronze medalist, and 100 points ahead of the college gold medalist,” Vasiloff said. “Ruth is a junior, so we are looking forward to next year and another opportunity to win a state championship.”
