Basketball: Stemmer, Sweetland Lead Hornets to Another SEC Red Victory

Ella Stemmer scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Saline’s varsity girls basketball team defeated host Skyline, 57-51, Friday.

Stemmer saved 11 of her 19 points for the fourth quarter to help keep the Eagles at bay.

Nicole Sweetland hit back-to-back three-point shots in the fourth quarter to spark Saline. She finished with 14 points and three steals.

Liz Sekerak scored seven points. Brooke Bauer, who was in foul trouble, scored seven second half points.

Kelsey Alexander and Erin Reilly led the Hornet defense. Alexander grabbed 10 rebounds and had three steals. Reilly grabbed eight rebounds and had three steals and three points. Maddy Welch and Asia Lindsey also made the scorebook.

Saline was down 18-13 after the first quarter but held Skyline to just two points in the second quarter.

Saline is 6-4 overall and 3-0 in the SEC Red.

In junior varsity action, Amera Boyd scored 10 points to lead Saline to a 50-36 victory over Skyline. Sydney Gresser and Steffi Bentley also scored eight points each.
