The 60th Annual Distinguished Young Women of Michigan Scholarship Program was held at Skyline High School in Ann Arbor on July 15th. Melanie Taylor, from Oakland Country, was selected at the Distinguished Young Woman of Michigan 2018.
Melanie competed along with eleven other state contestants to be awarded the state scholarship title. Contestants competed in areas of scholastics, physical fitness, performing arts talent, private interview and onstage questions. Melanie will represent Michigan at the Distinguished Young Woman of America Scholarship Program in Mobile, Alabama next June. A fully paid two- week trip to Mobile, Alabama is provided by the Distinguished Young Women of America organization. Melanie is also eligible for many full ride scholarships at various colleges around the country through the national program. “This was an incredibly talented group of young women and we are so excited with the new Distinguished Young Woman of Michigan. She will be an excellent representative at state wide functions throughout the year and at the nationals in Mobile, Alabama.” said State Director Angela Bobo.
Twelve contestants from around the state of Michigan competed and were awarded a total of $5,500.00 in college scholarships. Gabriella Petrucci, from Novi, was awarded the 1st Runner Up and Sonia Petrucci, from Northville, was awarded the 2nd Runner up.
Katie Powell, the Distinguished Young Woman of the Irish Hills, was announced as the 3rd Runner Up. Allison Mc Devitt, the Distinguished Young Woman of Jackson County, was announced as the 4th Runner Up. Osten Eschedor, the Distinguished Young Woman of Addison, was selected as the Brooklyn Kiwanis Community Service Essay Award winner. Madison Hibbs, of Dexter, was voted on as the Spirit of Distinguished Young Women. Danielle Deel, from Wayne, was the audience choice winner.
The Distinguished Young Women Scholarship Program awards college scholarships to young women who have distinguished themselves at school and in their communities. Contestants are high school juniors from around the state of Michigan who compete in areas of scholastics, physical fitness, performing arts talent, private interview and onstage question. It is part of the Distinguished Young Women of America, which is the largest and oldest scholarship program for high school seniors in the country.
