Saline Schools Abandon Plans to Include Planned Parenthood in Sex Education Curriculum

After hearing from the public at a meeting and in an online survey, the Saline Area Schools district has abandoned the proposal to have Planned Parenthood connected with its sex education curriculum at Saline High School.

The district has canceled the second public hearing, which was set for May 30, on the proposal. Instead the district will host a community conversation on the issue at 6 p.m. in the media center at Liberty School.

Below is a statement released by Saline Area Schools Assistant Superintendent Steve Laatsch.

 

Based on reviewing the comment/question cards, the discussion that took place at the first hearing on May 15th, analyzing survey data,  and talking to people in the community, it is very apparent that moving forward with any Planned Parenthood connected curriculum, at this time, would be too divisive in the Saline Area Schools.

Thus, we are choosing not to move forward with the “official” 2nd hearing on May 30th, but we will replace the hearing with a community conversation on this same evening.

  • Sex Education Advisory Council Community Conversation

  • May 30th from 6:00-7:30 PM

  • Liberty School Media Center

This conversation will continue discussion centered around a number of themes that have surfaced from community feedback. Thus, we invite you to participate in a conversation around the following questions…..

  1. How can we explore better methods in the sex education curriculum to allow for peer-to-peer conversation within health classes regarding information that is presented by the health teacher?

  2. How can we respect ALL opinions, values, and views for our students regarding sex education?

  3. How can we integrate education lessons that support our LGBTQ population that specifically apply to some very specific risk areas….bullying, teasing, etc.?

This conversation will be led by Dr. Laatsch, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction for the Saline Area Schools, and Mary Beno, Washtenaw and Livingston County Educational Health Coordinator.

Planned Parenthood representatives will not be asked to attend this meeting.

We will seek feedback, but more in conversation versus having people take to the lectern for up to 2 minutes. The goal of this meeting will be to provide feedback to the Sex Education Advisory Council (and our health education program, in general) in order to consider next steps.

Further, we will be transitioning the vast majority of the current Sex Education Advisory Council as they are finishing a three year term to a new Council who will take over at the beginning of July.

We are still seeking applicants for the next SAS Sex Education Advisory Council. If you would like to apply, please do so by May 31st.
