The cost of several City of Saline infrastructure projects will likely be felt when water and sewer bills are mailed in the next fiscal year.
Monday night at the city council work meeting, city staff proposed water and sewer rates for the next four years.
The average residential customer would see their water and sewer bill increase by 4.4 percent next year, or about $9.73 per quarter. The average Saline resident pays $222 per quarter.
The average large industrial customer would see their bill increase about 5.3 percent, or $3,079 per quarter. The average large industrial customer currently pays $48,461 per quarter.
Saline’s biggest customer is American Soy, which currently pays $45,162 a month. Their monthly would jump 4.9 percent, or $2,219.
According to the proposal, rates would rise even higher next effect June 2018. Residential rates would jump 8.4 percent, or about $20 a quarter for the average residential customer. A large industrial user would see rates increase by 9.9 percent.
The proposal also calls for a 2.9 percent increase for residents in 2019 and 6.4 percent for large industrial users.
If adopted, the average Saline resident would see their water and sewer bill rise from $223 per quarter to $259 per quarter by the 2019-20 fiscal year.
The proposal also shows water and sewer rates tumbling by 21 to 25 percent in June of 2020. Councillor Jack Ceo asked why the rates are scheduled to fall so much.
“Because we don’t have any major projects on the books,” said Joanne McDonough, accountant for the city. “Yet.”
Fixing the wastewater treatment plant’s odor problem could cost $2 million.
