Hornet Volleyball Powers Past Huron Behind Hannah Turner

Despite a rocky start that saw the team fall behind by as much as seven points, Saline's volleyball team was able to sweep the Ann Arbor Huron River Rats 3 – 0 Tuesday evening.

Senior captain Hannah Turner led the way, providing leadership and taking action from all positions on the court.

“Hannah has been fantastic all year,” said head coach Kenny Seiler. “She was a little under the weather, but she still plays every point. She wants to be a part of it and lead this team. Tonight, she was great everywhere.”

The first set looked like the night might be a long one for the visiting Hornets, but strong serves from Zoey Ammon and Payton Cole dug Saline out of a hole that had grown to as large as seven. Huron was unable to stop the onslaught entirely; the River Rats were able to retie the game at 22, but Saline was able to finish the match 26 – 24 on another good serve by Ammon.

“The game is never over,” said Seiler. “We can win games when we don't play our best. A lot of teams, when they don't play well, they crumble. That first game, (Huron) outplayed us, but we were able to come out with a win.”

The second set saw Hornet volleyball get on a roll and not look back. Cole served her team to a 10 – 2 lead that the home team was unable to come back from. Two breaks were not enough as Saline was dominant in a 25 – 7 set win.

“They started talking more (after the first set),” said Seiler. “They've been behind before, but they didn't freak out, which is good. (Huron) passed the ball really well in the first game; that made a huge difference.”

Turner gave her team a long serve run in the third and final set. Huron attempted to break her momentum with another timeout, but, trailing 15 – 6, they were not able to break through. The Hornets finished off their foe with a 25 – 15 win.

Long serving runs from the back line were evident throughout the evening, but the front line was equally strong for Saline. Angela Szuminski led the team with eight kills while Korbyn Koerner and Turner both added five.

Cole's ten digs as the libero added nicely to her strong night serving; Szuminski had nine of her own to go with her kills.

Saline Pharmacy 3 Stars:

  1. Hannah Turner – Turner led her team with four aces and had a good night wherever she was on the floor. She was able to be a force on the front line, whether blocking or going for the kill and still made her presence felt when she was on the back line.

  2. Angela Szuminski – Another Hornet that was seemingly everywhere. Eight kills would be a good night for anyone, but she added nine digs to keep the play moving when not finishing it.

  3. Payton Cole – Cole's role as the libero keeps her on her toes, but she was able to have a good night serving offensively as well as serve-receiving defensively. The junior was a vocal leader on the floor, directing traffic in tight spaces.

Saline Post Play of the Game:

It is hard to pinpoint a single play in an all-around solid performance by the team. Zoey Ammon's serve streak in the first game that started Saline's climb from seven points down was the turning point of the match, however. She was able to locate her serves in a way that made Huron struggle to get a good return or set up a powerful spike.
