Lady Hornets Fall 4-2 to Novi Wildcats

A shorthanded Saline varsity girls soccer team returned from spring break to face a stiff wintery wind and even stiffer competition in the Novi Wildcats.

Novi built a 4-0 lead and then hung on to win 4-2 over Saline.

“We had some new faces on the back line today and they had to make adjustments against a very good team. I thought our goalie Hannah Sheth played well,” coach Dana Restrick said.

Four Lady Hornets were suspended for not making spring break exercises. They’ll miss three more games.

Saline played with the wind at its back in the first half and despite good possession couldn’t generate many scoring opportunities. The Hornets were down 2-0 at halftime.

Saline struggled early in the second half and Novi scored twice to take a 4-0 lead.

Late in the half, senior captain Abbey Sovitch scored on a penalty shot to make it 4-1.

Sophomore Taylor Mulder got in on the action in the game’s final seconds. Mulder took a great lead pass and outraced the Wildcat defender. The Novi goalie made a great save on the first shot, but Mulder was first to the rebound, and she ripped it into the gaping net with 2.7 seconds to play.

“It’s nice to get a couple of goals at the end. It shows a lot of character,” Restrick said.

The Lady Hornets are home Tuesday to Troy Athens, Thursday to Tecumseh and Friday to Plymouth.
