After Besting Fundraising Goal, Salinians Prepare for Relay for Life
Participants should be in good spirits Saturday and Sunday during the third annual Saline Relay for Life.
130 participants on 16 teams have raised $39,141.56 for the American Cancer Society, easily beating the goal of $35,000.
(Donations are still being accepted)
The top fundraising team is the Coughline Ragland Champions. Lynne Coughlin ($7,530) and Karen Ragland ($5,700) are the top indivdual fundraisers.
The community is invited to attend any of the events or visit throughout the day.
Here's the schedule of events:
10 a.m. - Opening Ceremony
The Opening Ceremony brings everyone together for a high-energy start to Relay to celebrate the lives of those who have battled cancer, to inspire hope by sharing recent accomplishments and progress, and to remind everyone that while we are winning this battle, fighting cancer is a year-round priority.
10:30 a.m. -- Survivors Lap
During the Survivors Lap, upbeat music plays as all cancer survivors at the event take the first lap, cheered on by the other participants who line the track, celebrating their victory over cancer. Cancer suvivors are the guests of honor at Relay
10:30 a.m. -- Caregivers Lap
During the Caregivers Lap, anyone who has cared for someone with cancer walks so they can be honored for their support. Caregivers walk this lap with the people they helped if they are also present at the event.
4 p.m. -- Fight Back Ceremony
The Fight Back Ceremony symbolizes the emotional commitment we each make to the fight against cancer. The action we take represents what we are willing to do for ourselves, for our loved ones, and for our community to fight cancer year-round and to commit to saving lives.
10 p.m. -- Luminaria
The Luminaria Ceremony is a time to remember people we have lost to cancer, to support people who are currently battling the disease, and to honor those who have won their battle. The power of this ceremony lies in providing an opportunity for people to work through grief and find hope.
9:30 a.m. -- Closing Ceremony
The Closing Ceremony is a time to remember the lives of those lost and to celebrate that each of us has committed, through our participation in a Relay event, to fight back against this disease over the next year.
