Girl Scout Tori Monge Ensures Library-Brecon Trail is For The Birds Too
Tori Monge loves to walk the library trails so it was a natural for her to do her Girl Scout project in the woods. Tori, a member of Troop 771, created 5 different bird houses in the trees along the Library-Brecon Trail. Tori researched Black-Capped Chickadees, Eastern Bluebirds, Eastern Screech-Owls, House Wrens, Purple Martins and Tufted Titmouses and then built bird houses that these species will nest in. The houses were placed in appropriate and conducive places for these birds to discover. The project involved much research, studying and then building the houses. Tori was happy to have the assistance of her aunt Christine Millington and her uncle Paul Monge.
Tori created attractive and informative brochures that patrons can use when walking the trail looking for the birdhouses. The brochures are available in the library. “We are so pleased that Tori thought of the library when deciding where she wanted to place the birdhouses. We expect that her brochures will be used often as patrons explore the area and read about the different birds and their unique habitat requirements” stated library director Leslee Niethammer.
The Library-Brecon Trail was installed in fall 2012 and is a collaborative project between the City of Saline and Saline District Library. The .55 mile paved pathway starts at Maple Road and ends at North Harris Street, traversing through the library woods and Brecon Park. Funding for the trail came from the Tax Increment Finance Authority (TIFA), Washtenaw County Parks & Recreation Commission Connecting Communities, CARES and Saline District Library.
