York Township Thieves Caught, But Another One Strikes

Deputy Keith DeZwaan of the Washtenaw County Sheriff gave his verbal report to the York Township Board recently and indicated the township was victim to a rash of home invasions September 29.

“We had a total of three, and there was one in Pittsfield Township at the same time,” he said. “The following day, there was one in Scio Township, all done the same way.”

According to DeZwaan, the criminals entered the homes from the back entrance during the daytime.

“We identified a suspect vehicle, and possibly a female involved,” he told the board.

There was an area-wide broadcast to other police agencies, DeZwaan said.

“The Taylor police actually saw the suspect and brought pursuit. Property was recovered from one of the home invasions in York Township," he said. “We believe this is a state ring out of Florida that is doing these."

With the suspects put behind bars, DeZwaan said he assumed the home invasions would stop.

“Then today we had one more home invasion down the block on Stony Creek,” he remarked.

DeZwaan told the board that he is suspicious of anyone going door-to-door selling something or doing a survey, because they may be trying to find out if anyone is home. If no one is home, they break in.

“When you get an unexpected visitor, such as door-to-door salesperson, or whatever, I want to know. Use your phone to take pictures of the person,” DeZwaan advised.
