Police Report: Woman Gives Birth As Police Escort Couple to Hospital

 

A woman delivered a bouncing baby boy while she was being escorted to the hospital by Saline Police officers Theo Helms and Sgt. Kevin Murphy.

At 10:45 a.m., Saline Police received a call from a man who said he was driving his wife to Saline to deliver a baby at the hospital. Police found the Pontiac Sunfire on Michigan Avenue waiting to turn left on to Mills Street. Police turned the corner and led the vehicle to the emergency room. As they pulled up, the man jumped out and stated his wife gave birth in the car. Officer Helms directed him inside and checked on the mother, who had the baby on her chest. The baby was breathing and the mother said she was OK.

When police learned the baby boy and his family were doing just fine, they left the hospital.

Smash and Grab from Car at Evangelical Homes

Saline Police are investigating a “smash and grab” theft from a vehicle parked at Saline Evangelical Home, 440 W. Russell St. The incident occurred at 10:45 a.m. Aug. 11. Based on witness reports, police believe two subjects parked near Mills and Hollywood streets and walked to Evangelical Home, smashed out a vehicle window, grabbed a purse and then fled. The purse contained an unsigned moneygram worth $800, according to the report. The subjects were described as male and female in their late teens or early 20s, thin, and wearing gray, hooded sweatshirts. The female wore flip flops. Police are investigating. Child Neglect Case Investigated

Police are forwarding a reported child neglect case to the prosecutor’s office and to child protective services.

At 5:30 p.m. Aug. 6, police were dispatched to the parking lot at Busch’s for a report of children left alone in car.

A Saline woman called police after she heard screaming and found two unattended toddlers screaming in a vehicle. The children were left alone for at least 12 minutes, according to witnesses who were near the car.

The mother said she pulled into Busch’s to get a prescription filled. She said her newborn was screaming and that she was at her witt’s end and left her  twin two-year-olds in the vehicle, rolled down the windows and gave them sippy cups of water. She said she thought it might take one or two minutes.

According the report, the children appeared clean and unharmed.

Ann Arbor Man Arrested on Suspicion of Drunk Driving

A 22-year-old Ann Arbor man was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving Aug. 12 at Michigan Avenue and Harris Street.

At 2:15 a.m. Aug. 12, a 2013 Chevy Lumina driving in front of a Saline Police cruiser switched lanes without signaling. Police continued to follow the vehicle, which struck a curb on Bennett Street. Police followed the vehicle until it pulled into Speedway, where police conducted a traffic stop. The driver told police he “maybe had” five beers and two “jager bombs.” A breath test showed a blood alcohol content of .17, more than twice the legal limit. The driver was transported to Saline St. Joseph Hospital for  a blood draw. He was then lodged at the Saline Police Department until his blood alcohol content was below the legal limit. Charges are pending the results of blood draw.

The 2013 Chevy Lumina was impounded.

Theft from Truck

A 20-year-old Tecumseh man reported that someone stole his wallet and two packs of smokes from his pickup truck while he worked near Ruby Tuesday’s Aug. 11. The wallet contained two drivers licenses, bank cards and $120 in cash.

Car Entered on Crescent Lane

Sometime between 9 and 9:40 p.m. August 12 someone entered an unlocked Toyota Tercel on Chestnut Crescent. Nothing was missing.

Motorcyclist Arrested On Fleeing and Eluding Charge

A 22-year-old Belleville motorcyclist faces fleeing and eluding charges after speeding through town Aug. 6. Saline Police received a 911 call from a man who said there was an eastbound motorcycle on Michigan Avenue speeding and using traffic as a serpentine.

Police spotted the vehicle at Michigan Avenue and Harris Street and began following. The cycle stopped at Maple and turned North. Police ran the plate and records indicated the owner had a suspended license. Police activated emergency lights on Maple Road near Echo Court. The motorcycle accelerated, speeding at over 100 miles per hour, according to police. The cyclist slowed at Woodland Drive and then went around vehicles stopped for a red light, driving through the red light. He accelerated to well over 100 miles per hour, according to police, and disappeared over the hill. Once out of the city, police gave up the chase.

Van Buren Police arrested the suspect and impounded the bike at the request of Saline Police.

The man told police he was just out cruising around, according to the report. He told Saline Police he didn’t pull over because he did not know what to say to police, according to the report.

He was transported to Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department jail

Woodcreek Court Home Egged

A Woodcreek Court resident reported that someone threw a half dozen eggs at her condo between 10:30 a.m. Aug. 5 and 7:30 a.m. Aug. 6.
