A Dash of Salt: How Salt Springs Brewery Transformed to Get People Food and Their Favorite MicroBrews

Businesses are changing on the fly to survive the coronavirus threat.

In downtown Saline, Salt Springs Brewery heeded Gov. Whitmer's executive order that closed all restaurant dining rooms, and they've transformed to offer pick-up and delivery.

If you want your "Dash of Salt" view the menu below and call them at 734-295-9191. Curbside pickup is faster.

See our interview with Salt co-owner Mark Zadvinskis below the menu (click open in new menu for a larger version, or download it).

TSP: So, Dash of Salt, is that your nickname for awhile?

Mark from Salt:  Yes sir.  Adapting as best we can. Everything but the stained glass.

TSP: So, some of the other dining establishments decided they couldn't make it work. Can you tell me why you decided you could make it work with pickups and deliveries?

Mark from Salt: We are doing our best to make it work. It's an experiment at this point, but we are learning and adapting the best we can.  Small businesses are entering survival mode.  We are doing our best to do that, and at the same time, safely support the community's needs.  Not everyone cooks and not everyone can easily get out of the house.  We offer curbside pick up and delivery.

TSP: Right. We all need food. Especially tasty food

So how does it work? How do I get my Dash of Salt?

Mark from Salt: For now, you can call orders in at 734-295-9191.  We are looking into online ordering and a Salt app for the future. We added 2 more phone lines on Tuesday just for call in orders.

TSP: So far, what's the response like? How's business?

Mark from Salt: Yesterday was great.  There was a strong showing of support, but it also put us through some learning curves quickly.  We will keep getting better!  Today, lunch was unfortunately very slow.  We will need more folks to consider ordering if we are to continue the effort.   We will see how dinner goes tonight! Fingers crossed.

TSP:  Anything on the menu specifically for families?

Mark from Salt: We area preparing re-heatable family meal kits to-go. Our St Patrick's Day meals sold quickly.

TSP: You can deliver beer, right? How's that work? Any regulations on that?

Mark from Salt: We in a very fortunate position on this one.  As a microbrewery, our staff is allowed to deliver our own beer, so long as they are TIPS trained (everyone is) and verify the recipient is 21.   We could not use an outside service to deliver beer.

TSP: What's the popular brew on tap right now?

Mark from Salt: The Cashmere Zeppelin and Blood Orange Hefeweizen are almost always at the top of the list.

We also have the Double Cashmere on right now, but it's running low!

TSP: What's the mood among your staff right now? It's got to be gut-wrenching to make some of these decisions.

Mark from Salt: Those on site are rolling up their sleeves and all doing anything they can.  Learning new roles, answering phones, becoming drivers, etc.   Some staff has chosen to hunker down and we will welcome them back when they are ready...and safe.

We are all in a bit of a fog, not quite sure if this is a bad movie or real life.
