Seeking Annexation Deal, City of Saline To Offer Some Revenue Sharing to Township

City of Saline officials continue to negotiate an annexation agreement with Saline Township for Andelina Farms - a 284-home development planned for the city’s western border.

At Monday’s meeting of Saline City Council, Mayor Brian Marl reported Saline Township rejected the first deal proposed by the city. The original deal called for no tax revenue sharing with the township.

Marl asked city council if it would approve a second new two-year, two-mill levy (based on current taxable value) offer. Answering a question from Councillor Janet Dillon, Marl said it would be worth approximately $2,000 a year for the township.

Nobody from council objected to Marl’s proposal. Marl said he would mail the offer to township officials Tuesday.

Council has set Feb. 14 as the deadline to reach an agreement with township officials and Saline Venture on an annexation agreement for Andelina Farms. If a deal isn’t reached, Saline Ventures and MI Homes would develop the property with a private wastewater treatment system.

According to previous statements from Mayor Marl, the developer’s willingness to invest $5 million into expanding the city’s utilities to the west put annexation back on the table.

Reached by text Tuesday morning, Marl said the city and developer are making steady progress on a development agreement.
