BASEBALL: Bedford Takes 2 of 3 to Take Stranglehold on SEC Red Lead

Barring a major upset, it looks as if the Saline baseball team’s SEC Red championship streak has been snapped by Bedford. The Hornets had won seven straight SEC Red titles coming into this year. In fact, the Hornets had won 46 straight SEC Red games going into Monday’s tilt at Bedford.

Problem was, just like Saline, Bedford entered the game with a 10-0 record in the SEC Red.

Bedford pulled off a stunning 13-12 victory in the opening game of the series. That meant, Saline needed to win two of the final three games.

The second game began Monday and was tied, 0-0, in the sixth inning when play was suspended. Action picked up Wednesday at Saline High School. Saline scored in the top of the sixth – but Bedford replied with five runs in the sixth. Saline rallied for two runs in the seventh on a single by Brad Baldus and double by Alex Morrison – but it wasn’t enough. Saline fell 5-3 – and the Kicking Mules grabbed a stranglehold on the SEC Red.

Saline bounced back to win 12-2 in the third game of the series – keeping their slim hopes alive. For Saline to win, the Hornets need to take both remaining games against Skyline. And Huron would need to win both games against Bedford. Bedford would win a tiebreaker win Saline on the basis of head-to-head results.

SEC Red BB standings 05/15 UNOFFICIAL (Bedford - 12-1 / 19-6; Saline - 11-2 / 21-5; Pioneer - 6-9 / 7-17; AA Huron - 5-8 / 8-17; Skyline - 4-8 / 8-18; Monroe - 2-12 / 7-20); CORRECTIONS?

Coach Al Zeiher and the Hornets were disappointed by the loss. But Zeiher doesn’t want his team dwelling on it.

“There’s still a lot of baseball in front of us,” Zeiher said.

The Hornets are preparing for what they hope will be a long post-season run.

Lefty Ryan Steinhauer earned the win in the third game of the series. He scattered six hits and two walks while striking out four in six innings of work. Both runs he gave up were earned. They came in the sixth inning.

“Steinhauer pitched great for us and we swung the bats,” Zeiher said.

At the plate, Saline was led by Noah Nelson, Jack O’Keefe, Cam Daniels, Aiden Corrigan and Alex Morrison. Nelson went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI. O’Keefe was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and two runs. Daniels (2-for-2, two runs, 1 RBI), Corrigan (2-for-3, 2 runs), and Morrison (2-for-4, 1 run) also had two hits. Kyler Blake-Jones also drove in two runs.
