Board of Education Notebook: Union Praises School Board, HR Report, Job Fair and More

Saline Education Association leadership made a surprise appearance at this week's Saline Area Schools Board of Education meeting to drop off a belated School Board Appreciation Month present gift for board trustees and top administrators.

School Board Appreciation Month is recognized in January of each year.

SEA and SAS are just two months out from negotiating a two-year contract that saw some minor costs for dental, vision, and life insurance passed onto employees as a cost saving measure for the district, while early retirement incentives were included to coax senior teachers with higher salaries out of active employment and into retirement.

"We were not prepared for (School Board Appreciation Month), but we did not want you to feel that you were unappreciated," said SEA President Brian Boze.

Boze added that the SEA leadership and rank and file membership alike recognize the district's dedication to the mission of educating the Saline community's children.

"We appreciate the support you've given towards creating a collaborative bargaining agreement that is good towards everybody and just creating an environment that is inclusive and accepting of all of our staff and students," Boze said. "That cannot exist without a real clear vision at the top that allows the administrative staff and teachers to work towards the best results for the community."

In other Board of Education news:

  • The district saw two staff members resign from the district and two more hire on. Cosmetology Tech Jessica MacFawn resigned from Saline's portion of the South & West Washtenaw Consortium for personal reasons. Ryan Williams resigned from Liberty for personal reasons as well. Both resignations went into effect this February 28. On the other hand, Saline schools hired two paraeducators. Tamika King will work at the middle school and Rachel Rodriquez will start at the high school.  Both of them already started in the district last week.
  • District officials touted the #GetHired Job Fair and Educational Expo that will be held at Saline High School on Wednesday, April 24 from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.Businesses and organizations looking for solid candidates to fill part-time, seasonal, or even permanent positions are encouraged to make a showing at the expo for good exposure to Saline's finest young work-seekers. A coffee reception will commence at 7:30 a.m. the day of the expo to kick things off and then students will arrive at 8 a.m. "Our goal is to help prepare students for interviews, employment, and to facilitate communication between students and employers," district officials said in a letter promoting the expo. Business owners or recruiters who want  to participate have until April 15 to register by contacting Jody Gielinski at gielinsj@salineschools.org or Mary Visel at howleyvm@salineschools.org.
  • Superintendent Scott Graden's quarterly evaluation will be held during a closed session during the next board meeting on March 13.
