Trunk or Treat Draws 1,500 People to Downtown Saline

There were a few lessons to be learned for the little ones and their families at Trunk or Treat in downtown Saline Wednesday night.

One lesson was the age-old adage, “good things come to those who wait.”

Wait they did. Families, with children dressed in Halloween costumes, lined up in the Key Bank parking lot. The line snaked out to McKay Street, around to North Ann Arbor Street, and circled on to Michigan Avenue. Some families waited as long as 50 minutes. But when they finally got in, they were treated to treats from 35 vendors, music and dancing. They had their pictures in snapped in a booth. They met Darth Vader, his Stormtroopers and other Star Wars characters.

In other words, it was well worth the wait.

“The line was long, but it was a great event. Our kids had a lot of fun,” said Andrew French.

David Barton and his family arrived at 6 p.m. and waited 35 minutes to enter.

“The line was very long, but the volunteers and trunkers did a nice job trying to move people through,” Barton said.

Elizabeth Craig said Trunk or Treat was great and praised the planners.

“(It’s) so much better organized than last year. My kids asked if we could do this every year,” Craig said.

Main Street president and Hartman Insurance owner Jill Durnen, dressed in a Hogwartz school uniform, counted kids as they entered the Trunk or Treat event. In all, she counted 816 children. Adding the children to parents, vendors and volunteers, Main Street Executive Director Holli Andrews estimated there were more than 1,500 in downtown Saline for the event.

Therein lies the second lesson.

“We hope people see downtown Saline as a fun place for families,” Andrews said.

Karen Carrigan, owner of Carrigan Café, was a key organizer of the event. She said she felt the event went well.

“The line moved a little slowly, but since we had so much more time to plan, everything went more smoothly this year,” Carrigan said. “We’ll be looking at ways to improve the event.”
