LAX: Saline Rebounds from Pioneer Loss With 2 Victories

Last week, the Saline High School boy’s lacrosse programs continued to add to their already successful seasons. The Varsity program, posted a record of two wins against one defeat, while the Junior Varsity program was victorious in all three games.

The varsity team opened the week at Ann Arbor Pioneer, falling by a score of 17-13. After trailing 16-7 entering the fourth quarter, the Hornets outscored the Pioneers by a score of 6-1 to narrow the margin.  

Davis Bruneau led the Hornets in goals, netting four.  Jack Loveland added three goals and three assists, while Tanyr Krummenacher contributed two goals and three assists.  Contributing one goal apiece were Jackson Fairman, Robby Borer, Mitchell Gasche, and Chad Jarvie.  In addition, Liam Finnegan earned an assist.

Defensively, the Hornets were led in ground balls by Danny Krueger, Logan Bruneau, Borer and Loveland, each picking up three, while goalie Shane Winkelseth stopped 13 of 30 shots on goal.

The remaining two games of the week were both victories for the Hornets, 13-7 over Ann Arbor Skyline and 8-7 over South Lyon.  The Hornets led Skyline throughout, but needed a fourth quarter comeback to down South Lyon.

Against Skyline, Loveland led the way with five goals and two assists.  Additional offense was provided by Krummenacher with four goals and three assists, Davis Bruneau two goals and two assists, Borer one goal and one assist, Finnegan one goal and one assist, Noah Terech two assists, and one assist each from Borer and Mikey Johnson.  Krueger scooped up five ground balls to lead the Hornets and Winkelseth stopped 17 of 24 shots on goal.

Saline Dominates 4th Quarter to Defeat South Lyon

The South Lyon game featured what are becoming signatures of the Hornets this season, an offensively dominant fourth quarter along with outstanding play by goalie Winkelseth and the defense, in general. 

Midway through the fourth quarter, things looked tenuous for the Hornets, as they trailed 7-3.  Undeterred and having not been outscored in the fourth quarter this season, the Hornets notched five straight goals to pull out the victory.  In reminiscent fashion to their early season win over Flint Powers, Loveland scored the equalizer with 1:14 to play and added the winning goal at the 0:46 mark. Additional goal scorers were Davis Bruneau with two and Krummenacher and Borer with one each.  Assists were credited to Krummenacher with three, Fairman with two, and Terech with one.

For the game Winkelseth turned away 14 of 21 shots, while Logan Bruneau, Kingsley Amadi, Cam Crawford and Josh Davis provided the defense in front of Winkelseth.  Adding to the defensive presence was the play in the midfield of Jarvie, Krueger, Terech, Borer, Jake Leslie, and Will Olson, helping to slow down the South Lyon attack. Logan Bruneau, Jarvie, and Olson led the Hornets with two ground ball each.

Romp Over Huron

This week got off to a successful start for the Varsity with a resounding 25-0 win over Ann Arbor Huron. 

Players earning points included Davis Bruneau four goals and two assists, Krummenacher three and six, Fairman three and one, Peter Jacobson two and three, Connor Martin one and two, Johnson three goals, Loveland three goals, Jack Toor two goals, Kyle Hall two goals, Jarvie one goal, Terech two assists, Gasche one assist, Crawford one assist, and Krueger one assist.

Krueger and Sammy Richards led the Hornets with six ground balls each and Winkelseth saved the only shot he faced.

The Hornets take their 6-2 record to Toledo on Thursday to face St. John’s before they return to Hornet Stadium to faceoff against Birmingham Brother Rice Orange of Friday night at 7:00 pm.

Junior Varsity

The JV lacrosse squad raised their season record to 5-1 with victories last week over Ann Arbor Pioneer 9-7, Ann Arbor Skyline 8-2, and South Lyon 5-3.

Against Pioneer, after an even first quarter, the Hornets pulled ahead for good with three unanswered goals in the second quarter.  Pioneer mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t catch the Hornets.

Contributing to the scoring for the Hornets were sophomore Chris Peters with six goals and single goals from Evan Peoples, Joseph Singh, and Harrison Hill.  Peter Jacobson added two assists to round out the scoring for the Hornets.  Collin Clark and Sammy Richards scooped up four ground balls apiece and Mason LaFleur earned the win making seven saves.

Against Skyline, the JV Hornets jumped out to a 3-1 first quarter lead and cruised to victory in a time-shortened game caused by poor weather conditions.

Evan Peoples led the scoring for the Hornets with three goals, while Jacobson scored two and added two assists, Peters had one goal and two assists, and Thomas Hovde and Richards each scored one goal.  Finally, Connor Martin contributed one assist.

Matthew Herrin and Clark led the Hornets in ground balls with three each and LaFleur earned the win with one save.

Rounding out the week, the JV Hornets once again jumped out to a first quarter lead and led throughout, earning a hard fought victory over South Lyon.

Peters scored four goals for the Hornets and Peoples and one goal.  Single assists were made by Jeffery Inge, Richards, and Clark.  Martin led the Hornets with five ground balls and LaFleur turned away six shots for the win.

The JV squad will also travel to Toledo St. John’s on Wednesday, with the faceoff set for 5:30 pm.
