Saline Defeats Pioneer, Still Unbeaten in SEC Pools

Saline defeated Pioneer 122-63 in girls varsity swim and dive action Thursday. The Hornets remain undefeated in SEC competition.

Senior Maddy Murphy, junior Lizzy Spears and sophomore Maddie Luther each won two events for the Hornets, who also won all three relays. Sydney Kermath and Cam McPherson also won events for Saline.

Murphy, Emma Loveland, Luther and Lisa Gross won the 200-yard medley in 1:53.92 to open the meet.

Spears followed by winning the 200-yard freestyle in 1:55.12. Johananna Jorgenson was second in 1:57.92 and Emily Laing was fourth in 2:03.19.

Kermath won the 200-yard IM in 2:17.67. Lauryn Kruse was third (2:24.72) and Riley Jones was fourth (2:26).

Luther won the 50-yard freestyle in 24.68. Sarah Burchart was fourth in 25.77.

Cam McPherson returned to the diving board and captured the event with 268.9 points. Sarah Densham was second with 187.95 and Paige Gidley was fourth with 167.8.

Murphy captured the 100 fly in 1:00.97 – just shy of the state cut. Emily Klemptner was second in 1:04.16. Alexis Ploutz-Snyder was fourth in 1:06.06.

The only event Saline didn’t win was the 100 freestyle, which was won by Pioneer’s Anna Thomas (53.81). Sarah Burchart was second in 56.44 and Riley Jones was fourth (57.27).

Spears won the 500 in 5:11.21. Bailey Lupo was third in 5:38 and Sam Fitch was fourth in 5:41.11.

The team of Luther, Gross, Burchart and Spears won the 200-yard free style relay in 1:40.03, beating the Pioneer team in a close race.

Murphy’s second win came in the backstroke, which she won in 1:01.87.

Luther won the breaststroke in 1:10.12 Jorgenson was second in 1:11.09.

Saline finished the day with Spears, Kermath, Murphy and Jorgenson winning the 400 free relay in 3:42.61.
