Now through March 31st, Truck Hero Challenges Saline to Help Saline Area Social Service Raise $20,000 for Senior Aid.

SALINE, Michigan, March 10, 2021 – During the month of March, Truck Hero, Inc. is challenging the Saline community to help Saline Area Social Service (SASS) raise funds for its annual programs that benefit senior citizens. SASS provides resources to over 100 seniors in our community each year, including weekly grocery delivery to homebound individuals, prescription co-pays, emergency assistance for rent, utilities or car repair, laundry detergent, pet food, toiletries, and undergarments. Now through March 31st, Truck Hero is pledging to 100% match the first $10,000 in donations to help SASS continue and maintain efforts to support Saline community senior citizens in need.

“Seniors are a growing population in our community, and many of those we serve rely on social security checks as their only source of income,” said Anne Cummings, Executive Director at Saline Area Social Service. “All of us at SASS appreciate Truck Hero’s commitment to lead this donation challenge and for the continued generosity of the Saline community. Thanks to the community’s help, SASS is able to maintain the level of aid to our clients, even as participation numbers continue to increase.”

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, poverty in the 48176 zip code has increased by 57% and 2,740 people are now food insecure.* Nearly one-third of the adults receiving help from SASS are senior citizens, and the number of deliveries SASS provides to homebound residents has increased by 375% since the beginning of the pandemic.

“Many of the seniors that need our help are living on fixed incomes with high medical bills and limited family resources,” said Cummings.

Relying 100% on funding form community donations, SASS is the only organization in Saline providing comprehensive short- and long-term emergency relief to economically disadvantaged residents living in and around the Saline area. From its premises in a historic house on West Michigan Avenue, over the past year, SASS has supplied weekly groceries for up to 500 area residents needing help. SASS also offers clients emergency assistance for utility shut off, rent evictions, prescriptions, and gas for doctor’s appointments. At major holidays, SASS also provides households with food baskets for a celebratory meal, gifts and personal necessities. For services that SASS doesn’t offer directly, the staff at SASS utilizes their extensive list of resources to help its clients with appropriate referrals.
