Fair Parade Returns to City of Saline Sept. 1 to Kick off 80th Annual Event

The Saline Community Fair parade is coming back to town.

The annual parade, which kicks off the 80th annual Saline Community Fair, will be held at 6:30 p.m., Sept. 1. The parade isn’t returning to Michigan Avenue. Instead, it will begin at Henne Field on Bennet Street and then make its way down to Mill Pond Park, where organizers have planned several events and activities.

Of course, many of the fair participants show off the animals.

One of the attractions this year is a game between  members of the “Civil War-era baseballists,” the Chelsea Monitor Baseball Club.

Jon Van Hoek, captain of the club, is excited to play a match in Saline. His aunt, Kim, was a teacher here (inducted into the Foundation for Saline Area Schools Hall of Fame last year). The Chelsea team features Saline High School teachers Jeff Pike and Mike Hill.

“It's a great community pastime, with over 30 clubs in Michigan. It’s alive and well here in Washtenaw County with our clubs, and we would actually love to find someone to start another local club. Saline would be a great fit!  Perhaps someone who comes to the Sept. 1 game might be so inspired,” Van Hoek said.

The Saline Community Fair takes place Sept. 2-6 at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds.

• Sept. 2 – Miss Saline Pageant.8 p.m.
• Sept. 3 – Preschool Day. A2SO Pet Instruments from 9 a.m. until noon.
• Sept. 4 – Old Settlers’ Day, Ladies Day.
• Sept. 4 --  Beer Barn opens at 5 p.m.
• Sept. 4 – Lost Nations Rodeo 7 p.m.
• Sept. 4 – Saline’s Got Talent 6 p.m.
• Sept. 4 – Junior Livestock auction.
• Sept. 5 – Children’s Day/Hero’s Day
• Sept. 5 – School age activities, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Sept. 5 – Super stock, modified and tractor pullers, 7 p.m.
• Sept. 5 – Looking’ Back (Bob Seger tribute band), 7 p.m.
• Sept. 6 – Ag Day
• Sept. 6 – Taste of Ag event, noon to 3 p.m.
• Sept. 6 – USA Auto Cross Enduro, 8 p.m.
• Sept. 6 – Merchant Drawing, 8 p.m.
• Sept. 6 – Saline Rotary Steer Drawing, 9 p.m.
