White's Ace, Improved Putting Leads Saline Linksters to 2nd Place
Junior Emily White shot a hole in one to start the day and helped Saline finish with one of its lowest scores in years at the Brighton Invitational Monday at Oak Pointe Country Club.
White aced the fourth hole and helped the Hornets to a second place finish in the 14-team invitational.
Brighton won the tournament with a score of 312. Saline was second with a 329, which was the second lowest score the team has posted in eight years.
White shot a 73 to finish tied for third. Her six iron found its way into the cup on the uphill, 135-yard fourth hole. She also shot three birdies. Freshman Samantha Kellstrom continued her strong play, firing a personal best score of 79. She started her back nine off with a birdie. Stacy Cruz’s 82 was a dramatic improvement over recent outings. She fired a 38 on the back nine and birdied the 12th hole. Louisa Antonelli added her own birdie on the 15th and shot a 95.
Coach Betsy French said the Hornets’ practice on the greens paid off. Cruze had 13 putts on the back nine and Kellstrom had 30 putts overall to lead the team. Saline improved by 26 strokes since its last tournament.
French called the improvement encouraging as it prepares to begin SEC play at the University of Michigan Course Wednesday.
