Recycle those Christmas lights!

Saline residents have the good fortune of having a place to recycle used, old, burned- out strings of Christmas lights through the end of January.

The City Environmental Commission has set up a clearly-marked and brightly lit drop off box in the front entranceway of Saline City Hall to accept all strings of lights for the season.

It would be very considerate to tie the lights in bundles – we all know what it feels like to reach your hand into a knotted, knarled mess of light strings.

The Saline Environmental Commission will be responsible for recycling the lights, keeping them out of the landfills. The big box hardware stores such as Lowe’s and Home Depot also will accept these lights. Sometimes offering discount coupons for the purchase of new lights.

Light strings are not accepted as part of curbside pick-up as they will become entangled in the sorting equipment causing jams and down time at the material recycling center.

Remember that the front entryway of Saline City Hall also has recycle bins for both types of batteries – the reusable ones and the one-time usage disposable types. Bring in your batteries at the same time you’re bringing in those Christmas lights – all properly bundled.

We can all do our part to keep the recyclable items in the recycle stream and out of our landfills.
