Saline Volleyball Goes 3-1-1 to Open Season

The Saline varsity volleyball team opened the 2017 season by going 3-1-1 in the Legends Invite Saturday. The Hornets fell to Notre Dame Prep in the semifinals.

Saline opened the tournament with two wins. Saline defeated Plymouth 25-10 and 25-22.

Maddie Whitfield led the offense with six kills and Liz Howden and Kathryn Wilkie each had three kills. Brianna Woods had 10 assists. Emily Finkbeiner recorded 11 service points. She and Haley Blaney each served two aces. Whitfield had five blocks.

The Hornets followed by beating Gabriel Richard 25-18 and 25-14. Whitfield had nine kills and four blocks. Olivia Vance made five kills. Finkbeiner and Mickaley Monahan each had seven service points, with Finkbeiner dropping two aces. Woods had 11 assists. Finkbeiner also had 10 digs.

The Hornets tied Plymouth Christian, 25-20 and 22-25. Whitfield had eight kills and Vance had six kills. Woods had 17 assists. Blaney had six service points and two aces. Whitfield had four blocks and Finkbeiner had eight digs.

In the quarterfinals Saline dropped the first set to Brighton 25-19 but came back to win 25-16 and 15-13.

Vance led the team with seven kills. Whitfield had six kills. Finkbeiner had eight service points. Bero and Liz Howden each had two aces. Woods made 20 assists. Whitfield had six blocks and Vance had five. Finkbeiner had 12 digs.

Saline lost to Notre Dame Christian 25-16 and 25-23. Woods led the team with five kills. Howden and Whitfield each had four. Woods also had 11 kills. Monahan tallied six service points. Finkbeiner had 11 digs and Whitfield made four blocks.

Saline plays at the Monroe Quad Wednesday.
