Saline LAX Falls 11-8 in Battle at Pioneer

Saline’s varsity lacrosse (6-4) team lost 11-3 the first they played Pioneer. Friday, the Hornets lost 11-8 to the Pioneers.

Despite the improvement, the Hornets were shown that mistakes and turnovers are deadly when playing a team of Pioneer’s caliber.

After Tommy Hickey scored the first of his four goals to make it 3-3 early in the second quarter, the Hornets gave up four straight goals – including two that started with Hornet turnovers.

Sam Ozminkowski (two goals) and Hickey scored early in the third quarter to make it 7-5. After another faceoff win by Matt Baxter, the Hornets threatened again, but couldn’t penetrate the Pioneer defense for a quality shot.  It was as close as the Hornets would get.

Pioneer scored on their next possession to take an 8-5 lead.

Saline fell further behind early in the fourth but fired shots at Pioneer’s goalie until the final whistle.

Coach Matt Ceo was unavailable for comment after the game.

Hickey finished with four goals. Ozminkowski scored a pair of goals. Sean Corcoran and Nick Karapas also scored. Karapas added three assists and two ground balls. Brett Braun also had three assists.

Matt Baxter led the team with five ground balls. Corcoran, Keith Cummings and Griffin Sibo each had three.

Baxter won 13 of 18 faceoffs to help Saline in the possession department.

Tyler Cowen made 11 saves against the hard shooting Pioneer team.

The Hornets are home to Bedford Wednesday.

The junior varsity Saline team defeated Pioneer 14-5. The Hornets are unbeaten in 10 games.
