March Donation Match Challenge, led by Truck Hero, raises over $42,000 for Saline Area Social Service’s Senior Aid Programs.

SALINE, Michigan, April 2, 2021 – Thanks to the community and Truck Hero, Inc., over $42,000 was raised during the March Donation Match Challenge for Saline Area Social Service (SASS). This fundraiser invited the community to make monetary donations during the month of March to help SASS fund a full year of their annual senior aid programs.

Encouraging community giving, Truck Hero pledged a 100% match for the first $10,000 raised, allowing donors to double the impact of their gifts. These donations will help to fund an entire year of SASS services and resources for over 100 seniors in Saline, including weekly grocery delivery to homebound individuals, prescription co-pays, emergency assistance for rent, utilities or car repair, laundry detergent, pet food, toiletries, undergarments and more.

Due to the economic strain caused by the pandemic, the number of individuals served by SASS has increased by 48% since January 2020. Nearly one-third of the adults receiving help from SASS are senior citizens. Last year, SASS provided co-pay assistance for over 1,200 prescriptions and delivered 11,757 meals to homebound seniors, an increase of 375% from the previous year.

“Saline Area Social Service is so grateful to Truck Hero and all the Saline businesses, churches, community groups and individuals that came together to make this fundraiser such a huge success,” said Anne Cummings, Executive Director at Saline Area Social Service. “Thanks to the incredible generosity in our community, we far exceeded our goal for this fundraiser and SASS is better positioned to support our senior clients throughout the rest of this year, especially considering the increased need we've seen in the last 12 months.”

Relying 100% on funding from community donations, SASS is the only organization in Saline providing comprehensive short- and long-term emergency relief to economically disadvantaged residents living in and around the Saline area. From its premises in a historic house on West Michigan Avenue, over the past year, SASS has supplied weekly groceries for up to 500 area residents needing help. SASS also offers clients emergency assistance for utility shut off, rent evictions, prescriptions, and gas for doctor’s appointments. At major holidays, SASS provides households with food baskets for a celebratory meal, gifts and personal necessities. For services that SASS doesn’t offer directly, the staff at SASS utilizes their extensive list of resources to help its clients with appropriate referrals.
