At approximately noon on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, the City of Saline Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) experienced an overflow event of partially treated sanitary sludge as a result of contractor error while making improvements at the WWTP.

Approximately 146,000 gallons of partially treated sanitary sludge was released from the primary digester. WWTP personnel estimate that approximately 29,000 gallons of partially treated sanitary sludge was released into the storm water collection system that empties into the Saline River with the majority of the sludge going back into the WWTP.

The overflow event lasted for approximately one hour. The overflow has been contained and cleanup efforts are underway.
