Baseball: Finkbeiner, O'Keefe Hit Back-to-Back Bombs as Saline Salvages Split

Saline junior Sean O'Keefe hit a home run and pitched five innings for the victory over Northville.

Saline split a doubleheader with Northville in varsity baseball action May 23. The Hornets won 9-2 and lost 5-1.

In the loss, Northville scored three runs in the second and two runs in the sixth and the Hornets managed their only run in the first.

Chris Dunn held the Hornets to one run on seven hits and two walks. Saline starter Richard Hovde took the loss, giving up three unearned runs on three hits and two walks in 3 2/3 innings. Sean Millspaugh pitched 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Zach Schwartzenberger gave up two runs on three hits and a walk in in the sixth. Ted Eppinga pitched a perfect seventh.

The Hornets opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. With two out, Michael Schuby walked, Sean O’Keefe singled and Ted Eppinga walked. Josh Nelson singled to score the Hornets’ only run.

Saline got in trouble in the second. Saline made three errors and gave up three runs. Northville added two more runs on the fifth.

Saline reached third base just one more time in the game.

In the victory, Jake Finkbeiner and Sean O’Keefe hit home runs. O’Keefe started on the hill and won, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out nine.  Kellan Huang pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up a hit. John Holt pitched to three batters in the seventh, giving up one hit and striking out two.

Saline scored the game’s first two runs in the second. Michael Schuby tripled to centerfield. He scored on a single by Richard Hovde. Kellan Huang singled and later came around to score on a single by Zach Schwartzenberger.

The Hornets put on a fireworks show in the third. Finkbeiner and O’Keefe hit back-to-back homeruns to lead off the inning. But that was just the start. Cole Daniels singled. Schuby was hit by a pitch. Both scored on errors. Saline led 6-0.

Northville scored twice in the fourth on a two-run single by Diaz Saunderson. O’Keefe struck out the final to batters of the inning to leave a man on third.

Saline added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Finkbeiner walked. He scored on a single by Cole Daniels. Daniels later scored on a wild pitch.

Saline added one run in the fifth. Ryan Foley reached on a bunt. He stole second and third and scored when Thomas Miller hit into a fielder’s choice.
