A couple of calves are believed to have died in a Monday afternoon fire that destroyed a small barn at the Coleman farm on Jordan Road in Saline township.
The Saline Area Fire Department was dispatched to the farm shortly before 2:30 p.m.
“When we got there, the building was already gone,” said Saline Fire Chief Craig Hoeft.
No one was home at the time of the fire. Firefighters are unsure about how long the fire burned before it was noticed by passerby who called it in.
“It's too bad we couldn't have been there sooner,” Hoeft said. “Fortunately for everyone, the building was far enough away from the others that it didn't cause further damage.”
Hoeft estimated the one-story barn was 40 feet away from the home and 40 feet away from a nearby barn.
A passerby moved horses away from the fire before firefighters arrived. The farm is the location of Coleman's Corn Maze, which attracts thousands of visitors every year.
The cause of the fire was being investigated. Hoeft said the department is looking at heaters that may have been used to keep the young calves warm.
Pittsfield and Ridgeway provide water tankers at the scene.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 3:52 p.m.
