The Saline Junior Varsity hoops team’s record dropped to 6-2 on the year after losing on the road 63-55 to Dexter on Tuesday evening in a game dominated by two men with whistles in their mouth.  Foul calls were called early and often, resulting in Dexter converting 22 of 32 free throw attempts.  The junior Hornets had two starters foul out of the game for the first time this year.  Head Coach Jason Pickett joked after the game, “do want comments on the record or off,”  referring to the disparity in the foul calls in the game.

Saline jumped out to a 14-11 first quarter lead on the strength of 10 first quarter points by sophomore forward Adam Heisler.  “Heisler was unstoppable in the first quarter,” Coach Pickett said.  “Whether in the paint, shooting from outside or the free throw line, it didn’t matter.  His shots went in.”

However, any flow the Hornets had in developed was quickly squashed as whistle after whistle ground the play into a crawl, which helped the Dreadnaughts to outscore Saline 14-7 and take a 25-21 lead into the locker room at the half.

The third quarter featured a total of 38 points scored by both teams, with sophomore guard Trey Schrzan hitting a three-pointer and a couple of free throws and Adrian Graden sinking a critical three point shot at the buzzer to pull Saline within six, 45-39 heading into the fourth quarter.   The last quarter featured 39 total points being scored, with Saline holding a 21-18 edge but it was not enough to regain the lead.  The Hornets out-rebounded Dexter 31-18 in the game but could not overcome the difference in free throws attempted and made.

“The team gave 100% effort and I am pleased with that,” Coach Pickett said.  “We play tough team defense and help each other out on defense.   We want Justin to play down low because he is so tough to stop.  We will continue to improve and be ready to go Friday night at Skyline.”

The JV squad will travel to Ann Arbor Skyline on Friday night.  Tip off is 5:30pm.
