Fore! Saline’s golf lovers won’t have to go south to work on their game this winter.

Jeff Tapp and Melissa Miller, of South Lyon, plan to open X-Golf in the Saline Commons shopping plaza, between Emagine Theatre and the AAA Insurance office. The hope to open by mid-September or early October.

X-Golf is a state-of-the-art, indoor golf simulation center. Golfers use their own clubs to tee off, chip and putt a real golf ball into in to a giant high definition screen. Then the technology goes to work, measuring the golfer’s swing to simulate the shot.

“I’ve played so many golf simulators. This technology is top of the line,” said Tapp, a Dearborn school teacher who is planning a busy summer in Saline. “The automatic tee system is unbelievably accurate, and it knows when you’re pulling or pushing or slicing your drive.”

There are many ways to play. One can rent by the hour. One can play a foursome with friends. There will be leagues. One can also schedule time to work one-on-one with a golf pro.

“It generally takes about an hour to do 18 holes or four hours for a foursome. I can get 18 holes done in 35 minutes,” Tapp said.

Not only that, it’s fun.

“The graphics are unbelievable. If you’re standing there, ready to shoot, and you’re looking at the HD screen, it looks real,” Tapp said. “It feels like you’re right there.”

To add to the atmosphere, X-Golf plans to sell alcohol and serve clubhouse style food, like hot dogs and pizza.

Tapp and Miller, a nurse, are avid golfers. The Saline X-Golf will be part of a small, budding franchise which could have four locations by winter.

The first golf center is located in Novi. Their South Lyon neighbor owns the Novi location.

“We love golf. So, since our neighbor owned one, we checked it out and we loved it,” Tapp said.

When the opportunity arose, they decided to open their own X-Golf center. They looked at locations around Livingston and Oakland County before deciding on Saline.

“What we like is there’s a small-town atmosphere, but there is a big-town potential for business. It’s the best of both worlds,” Tapp said. “In all of our meetings the city officials have been friendly and helpful.”

X-Golf has already signed its lease with AF Jonna. The company is asking the city to grant a special use so that it may have a sidewalk café in front of the golf center.
