City of Saline residents have an extra month to pay utility bills without fear of penalty.

Saline City Council voted, 7-0, Monday night to extend the deadline by one month until June 1.

Water bills were mailed last week, according to city Treasurer Mickie Jo Bennett - although some people haven't received them.

Mayor Brian Marl raised the issue at the conclusion of Monday's meeting, saying many Saline residents have been laid off or furloughed due to the coronavirus. He suggested bill payment be extended a full month and found unanimous support from council.

Councillor Christen Mitchell asked what happens to people in a month if they still don't have the funds to pay their bill. Bennett said the city can work with residents on payment plans.

Marl suggested the city could take up the matter again in May if another extension is needed.
