Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette today named Saline resident Matthew Schneider as Chief Deputy Attorney General for the State of Michigan. Current Chief Deputy Carol Isaacs is retiring from the post on December 31,2016.
Schneider has served as Chief Legal Counsel for Attorney General Schuette since 2013.
Schuette also named Laura Moody as his Chief Legal Counsel and Daniel Sonneveldt as Senior Assistant Attorney General for Operations.
“I am grateful for the years of leadership Carol Isaacs has provided. She put in place a generation of strong, experienced lawyers that will guide the Department and serve Michigan residents for years to come,” said Schuette.
“Matthew, Laura and Daniel are all talented and bring a breadth of skill to the citizens of the State of Michigan. Matthew has a strong base of experience as an Assistant U.S. Attorney, at the Michigan Supreme Court and as my legal counsel,” said Schuette. “Laura has proven to be a capable and talented litigator and manager in her years at the Department of Attorney General. Daniel is a key member of my team, and is a consistently high performer who will fill his new role with skill and dedication.”
Schneider, currently the Chief Legal Counsel, is a former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District and was appointed by President George W. Bush as a Senior Advisor and Assistant General Counsel in the White House Budget Office. Schneider previously served as the Michigan Supreme Court’s Chief of Staff and General Counsel.
Schneider is a graduate of Michigan State University’s James Madison College and the University of Michigan Law School. He will assume the role on January 1, 2017.
Assistant Attorney General Laura Moody will replace Schneider as Chief Legal Counsel overseeing criminal and civil litigation policy for Attorney General Schuette. Moody has served in the Department of Attorney General for 19 years, most recently as Schuette’s Criminal Justice and Victim Rights Practice Group manager. Moody served as a prehearing attorney in the Michigan Court of Appeals, a law clerk to the Honorable Barbara K. Hackett of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, and a Michigan Supreme Court Commissioner. She has extensive experience handling criminal and civil cases in state and federal court in both the United State District Courts and the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. She currently serves on the Criminal Justice Policy Commission, the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards, and the Michigan Supreme Court’s Model Criminal Jury Instructions Committee.
Moody is a graduate of Liberty University and the University of Detroit Mercy Law School and will assume the role on January 1, 2017.
Senior Assistant Attorney General Daniel Sonneveldt has been named Senior Assistant Attorney General for Operations, responsible for managing the department budget, contracts and human resources. Sonneveldt was appointed as an Assistant Attorney General in November of 2000, and has served in a variety of attorney positions in the Department of Attorney General. His experience includes acting Division Chief in Consumer Protection, section head over collections and bankruptcy, and legal work in state affairs and gaming control.
Sonneveldt is a graduate of Western Michigan University and Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School. He will assume the role on January 1, 2017.
