David Elmer Proudly Served the Country During the Vietnam Conflict

H. David Elmer, 70, of Daggett, Mich. passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at the Oscar G. Johnson V.A Medical Center in Iron Mountain, Mich. He was born May 28, 1947 in Monroe, Mich. to the late Howard and Marie (Hill) Elmer. Dave attended Milan High School in Milan, Mich. On August 18, 1966 Dave joined the United States Army and served his country proudly during the Vietnam Conflict.

Elmer David-1.jpgOn June 6, 1970 he married Norma Jean Swanson at the Carney Evangelical Church. Dave was a maintenance foreman/ truck driver at Crop Production Services in Saline, Mich. and after he moved to Daggett he drove truck for Superior Welding and Wendricks Trusses both of Hermansville, Mich. Dave was a member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church in Stephenson, Mich., the Stephenson Lions Club, the Carney American Legion and Vietnam Veterans Group.

Dave’s greatest joy was being with his family and especially his grandchildren who were the world to him. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, going boating, being outdoors, wintering in Williston, FL and watching westerns on TV. In the mornings he wouldn’t miss going for early coffee with his buddies in Stephenson, Mich. and also did the same when he visited in Saline, Mich. and Williston, FL. Dave loved working in his pole barn, being on his tractor and enjoying his hobby farm.

Dave is survived by his wife Norma of Daggett, Mich.; son David (Kimberly) of Saline, Mich., daughter Cindy (James) Gochis of Saline, Mich.; 4 grandchildren Matthew, Alexa, Megan, and Kaleb.; 4 sisters Kathy (Jim) Lewis, Dawn (Fred) Wilkerson, Wendy (Tony) Olando and Lori (Wayne) Frohriep.

Dave is further survived by brother-in-law Allen (Brenda) Swanson, 2 sister-in-laws Linda (Dick) Corrigan and Mary (Ted) Jardeen and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, in-laws Eugene and Minnie Swanson and one nephew Travis Corrigan.

Visitation for Dave were held Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at Anderson-Diehm Funeral Home before the service, at 4 p.m. Pastor Cori Johnson officiated along with words from Pastor Dave Christenson. Burial followed in Maple Grove Cemetery in Oakwood with Military Honors presented by the American Legion.
