Erin Michele Shumway of Ann Arbor, Michigan passed away in July at the age of 23 after struggling with addiction for many years.
Erin was born on September 5, 1992 in Chicago, Illinois to Tyler Graham Shumway and Michele Lynn Ptaszynski. She grew up in a happy home in Lodi Township and attended Saline Area Schools. She graduated from Saline High School in 2010, where she was active in the DECA business club and played tennis.
In 2011 she was married to Michael Brighton. Their son, Dominic Michael Brighton, was born on March 21, 2012 in Ann Arbor. Erin was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and grew up attending weekly church services in that faith. She held many jobs during her life, most recently working for Home Depot. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her family, fishing and camping, watching scary movies, and visiting with friends. Erin was known for her bright smile, infectious laugh, quick wit and endless capacity for love. She was very compassionate and sought to lift those around her.
Erin is survived by her parents, her son and ex-husband, her siblings, Julia (Nick) Green, Peter Shumway, Laura Shumway, Hannah Shumway, and David Shumway, two nephews, her grandparents, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. Visitation for Erin will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Saline, Michigan, 525 Woodland Drive, at 12 p.m. on Aug. 10, and will be followed by her funeral service at 2 p.m.
