Marguerite Mae Gutekunst (Smith), age 90, passed away on Monday, October 22, 2018 at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital after a brief illness.

She was born on July 12, 1928 in Maybee, MI, the daughter of Lloyd Vernon and Hazel (Lentz) Smith.

On July 1, 1950 in Milan, MI she married Walter R. Gutekunst Jr. and they celebrated 60 years of marriage together. He preceded her in death on August 26, 2010.

During her lifetime Marguerite was the proud owner of Marguerite’s Beauty Salon in Saline for over 20 years. She also liked to volunteer at the Older Adult Recovery Center in Chelsea and at Saline Social Services. During the last 5 years she attended the Brecon Memory Support Center in Saline.

Marguerite and Walter also loved to travel, especially to Florida, and they loved to play cards together with Euchre being her favorite. They even visited Las Vegas to try their hand in the casino. Above all else she loved to spend as much time as possible with her family.

Survivors include their children Douglas (Karen) Gutekunst, daughter Sandra Gutekunst Sheats, grandchildren Ashley Sheats, Tracey (Becky) Sheats, and Lucretia (Banner) Rowley, and great-grandchildren Evan and Lucas Sheats, and Mariah and Damian Rowley. Other survivors include her niece Carolyn (Roger) Olds, brother and sister-in-law Jerry and Bonnie Gutekunst, sister-in-law Betty Smith, a very special caregiver Dana Jarrett, a special adopted family member Sue Ann Quinn, and many nieces and nephews. Marguerite was preceded in death in addition to her husband by two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral Services will take place on Friday, October 26, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Saline, MI. The family will greet friends at the church from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service at 11:00 A.M. Following a luncheon at the church, burial will take place in Washtenong Memorial Park. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to St. Paul United Church of Christ and envelopes will be available at the service.
